Day in the Life
Jilly McKie, a first year CA Trainee

9.00am
Working in the office on a small audit by myself. However, in the student area there are second and third year trainees to advise me with seniors and managers on hand, to help if I get stuck! Firstly, I check out my emails. On many of the jobs, we work directly with clients - it’s not unusual that they will send emails directly for my attention.

11.00am
Myself and two other trainees are booked to do the audit of a large property company next week, so we are on our way to a planning meeting. The job is not in Edinburgh, it’ll be nice to get out of the city for a week. The partner and manager will give us a briefing about the nature of the job and we discuss everything to do with the job. After the meeting I have to phone a couple of banks to chase up some letters.

12.30pm
It’s now lunch time and the student area is very chatty, everyone is getting hungry and looking forward to lunch.

13.30pm
After lunch, I can start my major job for the week. This time it’s creating the accounts for a sole trader. The client has dropped off all the records so I can now begin collating the information. At first it seems challenging; however I know I can ask any of the other students if I get stuck! The variety of jobs and working in different sectors is always interesting and no day is the same!

15.30pm
Next it’s off to a training session with my peer group. The subject is “Stock Taking” - we have plenty of stock takes coming up at our clients! Today, a senior trainee takes the session, so it’s very relaxed and lots of questions are asked!

17.00pm
Reply to a few emails and tidy up my desk for the day! All the CA trainees have round 3 of our “Student Games” tonight - we are making the most of the weather and are off to play rounders (it could get competitive!!), the games are followed by a few drinks and a bbq!
